Itinerary Day by Day
Day 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Your Kilimanjaro journey begins in Arusha, a tranquil gateway set beneath the commanding silhouette of Africa’s highest peak. Upon arrival, transfer to your lodge near Arusha National Park, where lush gardens and distant mountain views create a calm introduction to the adventure ahead. A briefing with your expedition team prepares you for the ascent, followed by a restful evening.
Day 2: Arusha National Park – Acclimatization Walk
Today focuses on gentle acclimatization within Arusha National Park, a diverse landscape positioned between Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. Guided walks pass crater lakes dotted with waterbirds and montane forest alive with wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and colorful birdlife. The day concludes with a welcome dinner and final preparations for the climb.
Day 3: Mount Kilimanjaro – Machame Gate to Forest Camp
Travel to Machame village on Mount Kilimanjaro’s slopes, where your ascent along the Machame Route begins. Trek through dense rainforest marked by towering fig and rubber trees and lush vegetation while gradually gaining altitude, with the possibility of spotting elephants along forest corridors. After about six hours of hiking, arrive at your first mountain camp set within the forest zone at approximately 10,000 feet (3,050 meters)
Day 4: Mount Kilimanjaro – Transition to Moorland
Depart the rainforest and ascend into Kilimanjaro’s heather and moorland zone, where vegetation gradually thins and volcanic terrain becomes more prominent. The trail reveals expansive views toward Uhuru Peak and the surrounding plains as you continue the climb. After six hours of trekking, arrive on the Shira Plateau and settle into camp at approximately 12,500 feet (3,810 meters), enjoying sweeping vistas toward Mount Meru and the Shira Needles.
Day 5: Mount Kilimanjaro – Lava Tower and Barranco Valley
Today’s trek leads across high-altitude terrain toward the Kibo Massif, passing striking alpine scenery before reaching the Lava Tower at approximately 15,000 feet (4,570 meters) for acclimatization. From here, descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, shaped by glacial streams and towering canyon walls. Your camp rests at about 13,000 feet (3,960 meters), offering both scenic beauty and strategic altitude adaptation.
Day 6: Mount Kilimanjaro – Altitude and Acclimatization
Focus on acclimatization as you navigate the Barranco Cliff on a steady hike that maintains elevation while allowing the body to adjust to thinner air. The route reveals impressive views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers before optional afternoon exploration into the Karanga Valley beneath the Heim, Decken, and Kersten icefalls. Return to camp for rest and preparation for higher altitudes ahead.
Day 7: Mount Kilimanjaro – Final Ascent Preparations
Continue your ascent across alpine desert terrain toward Kosovo Camp, located at approximately 15,980 feet (4,870 meters). The stark volcanic landscape and sweeping winds create dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak. After settling into camp, rest early as guides conduct final summit briefings ahead of the overnight ascent.
Day 8: Mount Kilimanjaro – Summit Day
Begin before dawn with a demanding summit push lasting approximately 12–16 hours in total. The ascent to the crater rim takes around seven hours, trekking across high-altitude terrain framed by the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers to reach Stella Point at approximately 18,630 feet (5,680 meters). Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa, before descending over several hours to your final campsite at about 10,200 feet (3,110 meters).
Day 9: Mount Kilimanjaro – Descent and Return to Arusha
Complete your descent through forested slopes to the base of the mountain, where your support team awaits. Transfer back to Arusha for a comfortable stay and time to refresh after the expedition. The evening concludes with a celebratory farewell dinner marking your summit accomplishment.
